2024 was a challenging year, marked by the loss of several notable individuals who can only be described as Fallen Heroes. These individuals, each in their way, made significant contributions to society and left a lasting impact on the world. Their untimely departure has left a void in our hearts and minds, as we remember and honor their legacies. Some of such fallen heroes are;
1. Onyeka Onwenu: (31st January 1952 – 30th July 2024).
Onyeka Onwenu known as the “Elegant Stallion,” left a memorable mark on the Nigerian music and entertainment industry with her soulful voice, impressivelyrics, and dedication to social causes.. Onwenu’s first music album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984 while her first movie role was as Joke, a childless woman who adopts an abandoned baby in Zik Zulu Okafor’s Nightmare. She later featured in numerous Nollywood movies such as Half of a Yellow Sun, LionHeart.
On July 30, 2024, she passed away after performing at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okoli, the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, in Lagos State. Onwenu, aged 72, collapsed during the event and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was sadly confirmed dead.
In an opinion piece she wrote for Premium Times in 2021, Onwenu reflected on how she wished to be laid to rest. She requested a modest and private burial, emphasizing that her passing should not be marked by undue parade. “Do it quickly, quietly, and privately,” she wrote. She encouraged loved ones to celebrate her life while she was still alive, stating, “If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I am alive, so that I can enjoy it with them, not when I am gone and have no idea about this. That is me, Onyeka Onwenu.”
Onwenu’s passing is not just the loss of an iconic figure in the arts but also the departure of a voice of reason, a champion for justice, and a woman whose life was a beacon of hope and inspiration. As the world mourns her loss, her legacy lives on in her music, her words, and the countless lives she touched.
2. John Ikechukwu Okafor: (17th October 1961 – 2nd March 2024):
John Ikechukwu Okafor, affectionately known as Mr. Ibu, was a legendary Nigerian actor and comedian, born on October 17, 1961. Famous for his unique comedic style and unforgettable performances, he was a beloved figure in Nollywood and a source of joy for audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
In October 2023, while on a movie set, Mr. Ibu experienced a severe health crisis that put his life at risk. He publicly shared his fear of losing one of his legs and sought prayers and financial help for his medical treatment. The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation stepped in, covering his medical bills and drawing attention to the ongoing need for his recovery.
Despite these interventions, Mr. Ibu underwent a leg amputation in November 2023 after enduring seven surgeries. His family emphasized that the procedure was vital to save his life and improve his overall health.
On March 2, 2024, Mr. Ibu passed away at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, at the age of 62, due to cardiac arrest. His death marked a profound loss for the Nigerian entertainment industry and his countless fans.
Mr. Ibu was laid to rest on June 28, 2024, in his hometown. The burial ceremony was attended by family, friends, colleagues, and admirers who came together to honor the memory of a man who brought laughter and happiness to so many lives.
Mr. Ibu’s legacy endures in the hearts of fans and through his iconic roles that continue to inspire joy and laughter.
3. Adejumoke Aderounmu: (26th March 1984 – 6th April 2024).Adejumoke Aderounmu was a talented Nigerian actress celebrated for her remarkable performances in both television and film. Known for her vibrant on-screen presence, she gained widespread recognition for her roles as Esther and Kelechi in the popular Nollywood TV series Jenifa’s Diary and Industreet.
She played the role of Jummy Adams in the Nollywood film Alakada 2 (2013), where she starred alongside renowned actors like Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Odunlade Adekola, Linda Ejiofor, Falz, Juliana Olayode, and Lolo1. She also featured in various other Nollywood productions that showcased her versatility and acting prowess.
Aderounmu was known to have lived a private life. She was never married but was deeply admired for her dedication to her craft and the positive energy she brought to her roles.
On April 6, 2024, Adejumoke Aderounmu passed away at the age of 40, leaving a void in the Nigerian entertainment industry and in the hearts of her fans and colleagues.
Her contribution to Nollywood remains cherished, and her work continues to inspire upcoming actors.
4. Quadri Oyebamiji Tolani: (25th December 1979 – 1st March 2024).
Quadri Oyebamiji Tolani, widely known by his stage name Sisi Quadri, was a prominent Nigerian Yoruba movie actor born on December 25, 1979, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
He went to school in Ore, Ondo State, for both his primary and secondary education. He also went to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
Before he became an actor, Quadri was a trained fashion designer. He started acting in 2002 in a movie called ‘Koto Aye,’ directed by the late Alhaji Ajileye. He was well known for his role in the movie “Seniyan Seranko,” which was released on December 4, 2004.
Sisi Quadri distinguished himself through a unique acting style, often portraying characters who were known for their sharp-tongued wit and mockery.

Sisi Quadri passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024, marking a tragic loss for the Nollywood community and his many admirers.
He will be remembered for his outstanding contributions to Yoruba filmmaking and for the legacy he left behind in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
5. Zulu Adigwe: (27th June 1945 – 23rd April 2024):
Zulu Adigwe was a distinguished Nigerian actor and singer celebrated for his significant contributions to Nollywood and his iconic paternal roles in Nigerian movies.
Zulu Adigwe rose to prominence as Mr. B in the classic Nigerian sitcom Basi and Company, where his performance endeared him to audiences nationwide. Over the years, he became a beloved figure in Nollywood, known for his commanding presence and ability to portray fatherly and authoritative characters. He featured in the 2019 blockbuster Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, a sequel to the iconic 1992 film, where his performance was widely appreciated.
Zulu Adigwe’s artistry extended beyond acting; he was also a talented singer, showcasing his versatility in the entertainment industry. He was a trailblazer for many aspiring actors and left an indelible mark on Nigerian television and film.
Zulu Adigwe passed away on April 23, 2024, at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy of impactful performances and cherished memories. His contributions to Nollywood and Nigerian culture will be remembered for generations to come.
6. John Paul Obumneme Odonwodo: (7th May 1981 – 10th April 2024).
John Paul Obumneme Odonwodo, widely recognized as Junior Pope, was a talented Nigerian actor and film producer who made significant contributions to Nollywood through his captivating performances and storytelling.
Junior Pope appeared in several acclaimed Nollywood productions, including: Secret Adventures (2007), Bitter Generation (2010), Nkoli Nwa Nsukka.
His performances often showcased his ability to bring depth and charisma to diverse roles, earning him admiration from fans and peers alike.
Junior Pope was celebrated for his dedication to the Nigerian film industry and his ability to connect with audiences through his authentic portrayals. His work remains a testament to his passion for storytelling and the vibrant culture of Nollywood.
Junior Pope passed away on April 10, 2024, at the age of 42. He was laid to rest on May 17, 2024, in his hometown of Ukehe, located in the Igbo Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria.
His untimely departure is a profound loss to Nollywood, but his legacy will live on through his impactful work and the memories he created for his fans and colleagues.
7. Amaechi Muonagor: (20th August 1962 – 24th March 2024).
Amaechi Muonagor (20 August 1962 – 24 March 2024) was a celebrated Nigerian actor, comedian, and movie producer. Known for his versatility and commanding screen presence, he was an important figure in Nollywood, having contributed to its growth and popularity since joining the industry in 1998.
Amaechi Muonagor was born in Obosi, a village in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. He attended St. Mary’s Primary School in Obosi and Oraifite Grammar School for his secondary education.
He furthered his education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State, where he graduated with a degree in Economics in 1987.
Muonagor began his Nollywood journey in 1998 and quickly became known for his memorable performances in movies such as: Taboo 1 (1989), Karishika (1998), Igodo (1999), Aki na Ukwa (2002), Aki and Pawpaw. His comedic timing, dramatic versatility, and unique ability to bring authenticity to his characters made him a beloved figure in the industry.
In 2017, Muonagor’s talent earned him a nomination at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for Best Actor.
In 2016, Amaechi Muonagor was diagnosed with diabetes, which led to his gradual withdrawal from acting. His health worsened in 2023 when he suffered a stroke, resulting in partial paralysis of his left leg. Despite these challenges, his contributions to Nollywood remained deeply respected.
On 24 March 2024, Amaechi Muonagor passed away from kidney failure at the age of 62.

8. Adedeji Aderemi: (15th May 1950 – 4th January 2024):Adedeji Aderemi, widely known by his stage name Olofa Ina, was a prominent Nigerian actor, cultural icon, and a respected elder in the Yoruba movie industry.
Adedeji Aderemi was born in Ede, Osun State, Nigeria, to the family of Chief Abdulsalam Aderemi and Aisha Aderemi. He grew up in a family deeply rooted in tradition and culture, which later influenced his career in the arts.
He attended St. Peters Anglican Primary School and furthered his education at Baptist Secondary Modern School, Ode-Omu, from 1957 to 1965.
Aderemi was celebrated for his roles in Yoruba-language films, where he often portrayed wise and authoritative characters. Known for his stage name, Olofa Ina, he became a household name, representing traditional values and the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. His commanding performances and deep understanding of cultural nuances earned him admiration from audiences and colleagues alike.

9. Abdulsalam Sanyaolu: (July 1923 – 31st October, 2024).
Abdulsalam Sanyaolu, widely known by his stage name Charles Olumo, was a legendary Nigerian actor renowned for his work in Yoruba-language films.
Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, Charles Olumo hailed from a family rooted in the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. His upbringing in Abeokuta significantly influenced his career, particularly his performances in Yoruba-language cinema.
Charles Olumo was a pioneer in the Nigerian film industry, making a significant impact through his dynamic portrayals of both heroic and villainous roles. He began acting in 1953 at a church in Lagos. He was celebrated for his versatility, charisma, and ability to embody complex characters, which earned him a loyal fanbase. His performances reflected the cultural and traditional values of the Yoruba community, making him a beloved figure in Nollywood.
Despite his advanced age, Charles Olumo remained a revered figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, inspiring younger actors and fans alike. He passed away on October 31, 2024, at the remarkable age of 101, leaving behind an enduring legacy in Nollywood and the hearts of those who admired his work.

10. Ajayi Aduke Morounkola: (16th March 1990 – August 2024).
Aduke Gold, born Ajayi Aduke Morounkola in Ilesha, Osun State, Nigeria, was a renowned gospel singer celebrated for her melodious voice and spiritual music. Tragically, she became an orphan at the age of four, facing numerous hardships, including hawking goods to fend for herself.
Despite these challenges, Aduke pursued education, becoming an educationist, horticulturist, and entrepreneur with multiple academic qualifications. Aduke’s music resonated deeply within the gospel community, inspiring many with her soulful melodies and unwavering passion. She was known for her dedication to her faith and her contributions to gospel music in Nigeria.
In August 2024, Aduke Gold passed away at the age of 34. Initial reports about the cause of her death varied, with some sources suggesting complications from a fibroid surgery. However, her family later clarified that she succumbed to cervical cancer.
Her funeral took place on August 23, 2024, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, where family, friends, and fans gathered to pay their final respects.
