Lifestyle

In a recent interview on the Teju Babyface Podcast, actor Bayo Bankole, popularly known as Boy Alinco, emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage through traditional names. He urged parents to choose indigenous names for their children instead of foreign ones, highlighting the beauty of Yoruba names like Oluwaseun, Oluwapamilerinayo, and Oluwasoromidayo.

Bankole cautioned that favoring foreign names could lead to a loss of cultural identity. Addressing concerns about pronunciation, he noted that schools and institutions manage to pronounce complex Dutch, Russian, and Indian names, suggesting that African names should be no different.

He also pointed out that while African Americans often struggle to trace their roots, other communities, such as Indians and Jews, maintain strong cultural ties through their names. Bankole expressed his deep commitment to cultural preservation, stating that even in death, he hopes his legacy will inspire future generations to embrace their heritage.
