A Night in 2005, a movie Written & Directed by Temidayo Makanjuola. The film opens with promise, introducing a cast of characters and clearly defining who we should root for and who we should fear. While it gives the characters room to showcase their strengths and flaws, the film quickly struggles to build on its initial potential. With multiple perspectives and scenarios, the narrative becomes tangled, never fully delivering on the suspense or intrigue the genre demands.
The film teeters between strong moments and missed opportunities, ultimately leaving a sense of underwhelming resolution. Here’s a closer look at what works and what doesn’t in this Nollywood drama.
The story allows its characters to showcase their strengths, flaws, and unique quirks, making them relatable and interesting.
However, the narrative takes on multiple perspectives, presenting a variety of scenarios and building connections that ultimately make it difficult to sustain the plot.
The film lacks intrigue. While it had the potential to deliver thrilling, edge-of-your-seat moments, it falls short, never quite managing to generate the suspense or shock that are central to this genre. It’s not convincing enough to make your heart race.
There is a scene in particular, that I find quite absurd, with the three women in the in Opeyemi (Efa Iwara) life unconvincingly teaming up to take justice into their own hands. While each of them has suffered in different ways, the story doesn’t fully explain how they all align with the same goal.
How realistic is it for women to come together to defeat a common enemy driven by love or sexual motives? Rarely, unless the plot provides a believable reason for their unity something that’s not fully fleshed out here.
“A Night in 2005” makes a decent effort, managing to rise slightly above average an accomplishment that’s acceptable by Nollywood standards.
