Juju Stories

Juju Stories is a Nigerian anthology film that masterfully delves into the supernatural, drawing from African folklore and urban legends to explore themes of love, greed, jealousy, and mysticism. Directed by the acclaimed trio of C.J. Obasi, Abba Makama, and Michael Omonua—collectively known as the Surreal 16—the film presents three unique tales, each showcasing a distinct aspect of the mystical and otherworldly.

The first story, “Love Potion,” explores the unintended consequences of using magic to manipulate love. It follows a young woman who resorts to a mystical potion to bind her lover, only to discover that such power comes at a price.

The second tale, “Yam,” blends dark humor with the supernatural as it tells the story of a street hustler who stumbles upon a cursed object. Driven by greed, he unravels a chain of bizarre and chilling events that question his morality.

In the final story, “Suffer the Witch,” the film dives into the themes of jealousy and suspicion as a student begins to suspect her friend of practicing witchcraft, leading to revelations that blur the line between reality and the mystical.

Juju Stories has been praised for its atmospheric storytelling, captivating performances, and its seamless blend of modern and traditional elements. The film highlights the richness of African folklore while presenting it in a contemporary light, offering audiences both thrills and thought-provoking narratives. It stands as a landmark in Nigerian cinema and a testament to the power of collaborative, innovative storytelling.
